Understanding Land Use during 18th Century America – Grade 7
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How did the interaction between Natives, English and French in early America affect the landscape in the Northeast and promote or resolve conflict between nations?
OBJECTIVES
Students will understand how the various culture groups in New England transformed the environment to meet their needs
Students will create a map of New England in the 18th Century
Students will contrast land use of the three empire groups: English, Native, French
Students will compare/contrast perspectives of the French, English and Native on land use and settlement. They will identify the causes and effects of the French and Indian War. They will devise a plan to eliminate conflict between nations with different perspectives on land use and culture.
Top officials from France, England, and the Native People of America need your advice on how to resolve the problems they are facing in regards to land use, acquisition and trade to promote peace amongst all nations.

PROCEDURES
1. Story of Mt Sugarloaf - Have students listen to the oral history story on the "Beaver Story"
2. Slideshow on NE landscape with questions about use (attached)
3. Break students into three groups (Native, English, French) have students read about land use and settlements of the Northeast during the 18th Century (use websites under resources and guided questions worksheet)
4. Have students report to group about land use and settlement findings As groups present have all students take notes on three cultural groups.
5. Have students create a map/illustration and write a summary on the land use and adaptations by the three cultures .
6. Write a persuasive essay on how to resolve the problems nations are facing in regards to land use, acquisition and trade to promote peace amongst all nations.
