Immigration - Grade 8
Objective:
Grade 8- Students will form an opinion and create a persuasive essay on how immigration can promote diversity, prosperity and acceptance on a global level.
There are many push and pull factors that promote immigration in the past and present. How can immigration help or hinder a society and what steps should be taken to ensure peace, prosperity and acceptance amongst diverse cultures?
Common Core Standards
R 8.1 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RI 8.3 Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events (e.g., through comparisons, analogies, or categories).
RI 8.5 Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph in a text, including the role of particular sentences in developing and refining a key concept.
W 8.1 Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
a. Introduce claim(s), acknowledge and distinguish the claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically.
b. Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
c. Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence.
d. Establish and maintain a formal style.
e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented.
W 8.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
SL 8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacherled) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
SL 8.4 Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
H 8.7 Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).

Procedures:
1) Share the Tide Of immigration Flipchart and have students complete the Tide of Immigration Note Organizer.
2) Break students up in groups of 4-5 students.
3) Review the Play/Skit Requirement Sheet
4) Have students read the background information on their immigrant groups
5) Have students write the script for their play/skit
6) Have students create props and gather costumes for their play/skit
7) Have students perform their play/skit to the entire class and other parents/community members.
8) Have students review the Persuasive Argument Rubric
9) Have students complete the Graphic Organizer for writing a Persuasive Argument
10) Have students write their persuasive argument
