Canada and Early Settlements - Grade 5
Objective:
Students will identify cause and effect of early settlements in Canada from France,. They will investigate, trade and cultural assimilation between France and Canada. They will provide suggestions on how their ancestors from Canada could have developed more successful settlements. They will investigate landscape, farming techniques, trade, etc.
You are an early settler in Canada from France. How can you develop a successful settlement that will thrive and encourage other settlers to move from France?

Graphic Organizer to be used with informational readings
Informative cause and effect essay requirements
Persuasive Brochure requirements
Procedures:
1) Complete the cause and effect worksheets (2)
2) Have students identify something in their lives that has a cause and effect
3) Read and complete the settlement location worksheet as an entire class
4) Divide students in pairs and have them read about early settlements in New France and fill in the graphic organizer for each reading.
5) Review the informative cause and effect essay requirements
6) Have students write the cause and effect essay
7) Review the requirements for the Colonial Brochure
8) Have students create the brochure: finding illustrations and typing paragraphs
Assessment:
Students will write an informative essay describing the causes and effects of early settlements in Canada.
Students will create an historical brochure on the early settlements of Canada.
